Playing Against Bots

Posted under poker

Playing in online poker rooms and casinos such as Fulltiltpoker.com, it can be easy to blame failure on bots, the ubiquitous software programs that simulate human activity at the keyboard.  While it is true that there are many players who utilize these type of software programs to effectively put them over the top at sites and other online poker rooms and casinos, the truth is, that these online software poker room playing programs, commonly referred to as bots, are not very difficult to beat.  The trick behind bots is that they have a certain set of algorithms that they continuously rely on to determine risk and evaluate odds.  By evaluating odds and determining the risk of playing each particular hand, the online poker room software program bots can repeatedly and consistently succeed in low limit games and games against players who are less than experienced or not as skilled as they might otherwise be.  With this focus on playing in low limit rooms and against less than experienced players, the ubiquitous bot programs have some suitable chance to win against lower-level players.  But as they come into competition with experience players, the bots are easily defeated, as they have little ability to rationally predict human behavior, such as the tendency to bluff and pretend to bluff.

While playing against bots can be frustrating, as it is difficult to understand when the actions taken are dictated by logic or by human intuition, the truth is, playing against human players is far more challenging and should cause more concern for the online poker room player.  Bots should be considered an easy way to earn some quick money.  In the event that the online poker room player is unable to win against these types of simple software programs, similar to the basic programs that provide competition in video games, they are very likely under skilled and unable to effectively compete against a reasonable challenge in the first place.  In this rare case, the online poker room players should continue to work on their skills to improve their ability to win in online poker rooms and casinos.  If the player cannot defeat a simple bot, then they certainly will not have much luck against more experienced opponents, especially the professional level poker players that prevail at online poker rooms and casinos.  Playing against these professional level players is so far beyond the realm of what online poker room software bot programs are capable of and that it hardly bears mentioning.
