Online Poker Rooms at a Loss to Prevent Underage Players

Posted under poker

Considering all the difficulties that online poker rooms and casinos have had with the United States government and its restrictions on gambling and playing poker on the Internet, it seems somewhat unfair to target the industry for additional regulations.  But, due to the illegal nature of gambling for underage players, there is a growing emphasis on preventing underage players from participating in online poker rooms and casinos such as Fulltiltpoker.com.  Without any suitable method of stopping underage players from joining, online poker rooms and casinos such as Fulltiltpoker.com make an easy target for legislators and lawmakers who have the unenviable task of finding easy issues to win to get voters behind them in the next election.  Without strong reelection chances, politicians would not be able to serve their constituency and put a lot of focus on these types of issues in order to effectively guarantee that they can be reelected.  By finding issues that are easy to manipulate the public about, politicians stack elections in their favor quite easily.

One of these issues that are easy to win at is taking on online poker rooms and casinos for virtually any offense, whether real or imagined.  These virtually inexhaustible sources of new founts of public outrage are heated to boiling over in discussion groups and voters are whipped to a frenzy through all manner of media outlets and propagandizing by the incumbent or election hopeful.  Currently, the most recent issue deals with underage Internet gambling and has all manner of politicians as well as legislators and lawmakers jumping on the bandwagon and pointing their fingers at the venerable institution of gaming and gambling.  While it may be true that it is difficult to effectively ascertain the age of online players, is also true that adult sites that feature all manner of adult films and materials are also just as easily entered into by underage Web surfers.

The concept of preventing underage players and Web surfers from doing as they please on the Internet is somewhat far-fetched, as security software experts have proven again and again that no matter what type of boundaries, obstacles and roadblocks that might be erected, the youth of the nation who have grown up with the Internet are more than capable of circumventing it, rendering almost any protections that can be generated for online poker rooms and casinos to be pointless.  Until an effective method of preventing underage players in online poker rooms and casinos is developed, there is little chance that any real law can be passed that addresses this issue.
