Despite the poor economy that is associated with Florida’s recent housing slump, there is a tremendous amount of tax revenue being generated through poker rooms since Florida instituted a more lenient gambling law. The law allows higher limits on some games as well as allows poker rooms to stay open seven days a week. This increased effort to allow more revenue to be generated by the poker rooms has allowed all manner of profits to come rolling in the form of tax revenue. Considering that the state taxes revenue generated by poker and other forms of gambling at 10%, this is quite a windfall for the state of Florida, as more and more players are flocking to the poker room since the limits and amount of spending has increased in such a tremendous and dramatic way. Some poker rooms have almost doubled their income since the more lenient law was drafted and passed in Florida, and as new players become familiar with the new law, more and more will continue to invest in the higher limit games and options available to the native Floridian. This focus on higher limits and more lenient play options is a win-win situation for the player, the establishment and the local government.
Players now have the option to play for higher limits in a wide variety of games, giving them the ability to earn more money in the long run as well as do it more quickly. Gaming establishments benefit from higher limits by being able to field larger pots with bigger buy ins, as well as draw more customers from all over the local area to these higher limits. The benefits that the government receives from the higher limit is quite obvious in the form of the 10% that is collected from all gaming and gambling revenue in the state of Florida. With this 10% collection in effect, every poker game, slot machine and other type of gambling revenue is taxed, providing a steady revenue stream for the local Florida government. Without this revenue stream, it would be difficult indeed for the Florida government to continue allowing the types of games and gambling that generate this tax revenue. It is a necessary function of the government to collect these funds in an attempt to remain solvent at every level, as the housing market crashes around them.
